House using a SELCO Solar Lighting System

As we enter the 21st century, electricity still reaches only a limited portion of the world’s population. Over 1.6 billion people worldwide lack a connection to the electricity network, and even those who do have access routinely face power cuts. Those without electricity have a desire to improve their life through reliable, modern energy sources but have few cost-effective alternatives. Candles, kerosene, and oil lamps are still some of the most common options for basic lighting, with small dry-cells and automotive batteries used to power radios, televisions, and small appliances. These sources are low-quality, cumbersome, expensive, and often dangerous, but were the only available options to rural families — until now.
